Lenoir County is now accepting nominations for the 2027 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award. The deadline to submit nominations is January 29, 2027.
Established by the Office of the Governor in 1979, the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes North Carolina’s most dedicated volunteers. Since its creation, thousands of North Carolinians have been honored for demonstrating concern and compassion for their neighbors through volunteer service in their communities.
Each county may select up to ten individuals, businesses, groups or teams, and one paid Director of Volunteers for recognition based on their outstanding contributions to the community.
One nominee will also be selected for consideration for the Governor’s Medallion Award for Volunteer Service, which recognizes the top 20 to 25 volunteers statewide. A local committee will evaluate all nominations.

Eligibility Guidelines
To be eligible for consideration, nominees must meet the following requirements:
- Nominees must have participated in volunteer activities in North Carolina for at least one year. Volunteer service performed outside the state is not eligible.
- Nominees cannot receive compensation for their volunteer service, including school credit, service as a “loaned executive,” or other forms of compensation.
- Volunteer service required by schools, courts, or other authorities is not eligible.
- Self-nominations are not permitted.
- Individuals who have received the award within the past 10 years are not eligible.
- Family members cannot nominate other family members.
- Groups must be nominated by someone outside their organization.
